The museum work in the town of Lovech started on 10 February 1895. A museum collection at Lovech Community Center was opened, and it contained 570 exhibits donated by the citizens of the town. As a result of the unremitting work of a few generations museum workers, today the collections of the museum consists of more than 60 000 objects. There are 4 thematically and chronologically divided Sections: "Archeology", "Bulgarian history - XV-XIX century", "Ethnography" and "New and Newest history of Bulgaria". There is a functioning restoration and conservation laboratory in the Museum.
The earliest materials in the section "Archeology" are from Prehistory period and were found on the upstream of Osam river in the Tabashka, Vasil Levski and Devetashka Caves. Around one fifth of the most representative monuments of the Thracian art are found in Lovech region (Letnitsa, Lukovit, Radyuvene, Alexandrovo, Toros and others). The antique sources mentioned for the first time for the existence of a road station and a settlement Melta on the territory of the town during Roman ages (IV century). The fortress of Lovech played a crucial role in the government of the state and the spiritual life of the Second Bulgarian Kingdom.
Written and material records of the economic, political and cultural history of Lovech and the region during the Medieval ages and the Revival period are stored in the collection "Bulgarian history XV-XIX century". The collection of medieval and revival manuscripts and old printed books is extremely valuable for the collection. The fact that the town was chosen by Vasil Levski- the Apostle of Bulgarian Freedom, for a center and a Capital of Revolutionary movements, predefines the main topic in the collective and research works in the section. The stress is put on the participation and the role of Lovech and Lovech citizens in the fights against Ottoman rule and resurrection of the old state. In this connection, on 19 February 1954 the Museum Vasil Levski was opened.
On 10 May 1931 in the village of Kakrina was opened the museum "Kakrinsko Hanche", which since 19 February 1956 has become a branch of the Historical Museum Lovech.
The "New and newest Bulgarian History" Section includes the time range since Bulgaria's Freedom 1878 until nowadays. Exhibits, photographs and documents of politicians of local and national significance, of Bulgarian scientists, born in Lovech, including 8 professors - founders of Bulgarian science, are all stored in the museum. Central place in the fund is taken by the exhibits reflecting the participation of 34th Troyan Infantry in the wars for national freedom. The Section has a rich collection of materials, connected with the Second World War, the brigade movement 1946-1948, Collectivization of agriculture and industrialization of the region. Special place is dedicated to the first Bulgarian cosmonaut Georgi Ivanov- born in Lovech.
In "Ethnography" Section are gathered, stored and shown the ethnographical wealth of Lovech and the region. The two ethnographical expositions are only one small part of the collection of the museum, which contain hundreds of exponents- icons, typical for the region fabrics and national costumes, ornaments, furniture, crafts instruments, etc.
