On the initiative of a group of citizens in 1951, the first exhibition of the museum was opened in the house of the writer Gyoncho Belev, and it represented the ethnographic wealth of the Ihtiman region. During the 60-es by the decision of the Culture Comittee, the Museum was specialized as a Museum of the Capitalism and the revolutionary-working movements. The Museum was moved into the center of the town and an exhibition corresponding to the profile of the Museum was opened. The collection of the museum was constantly being enriched, and following the changes in the political system in 1992, the Ministry of culture decided to rename the Museum to Historical Museum. In 1993 the new exhibition of the museum was opened.
